Notes from Artistic Director Erskine Smith

March 03, 2010

Then we moved up to the ultimate in technological communication - an IBM Selectric typewriter with interchangeable typeface balls and the prized 'correct' key. Layout work (brochures, posters, programmes) was all done by hand with Letraset.

Now we have at least five different computers dedicated to specific people or tasks. We have a Domain Name and a website where you can choose your seat for any performance, and pay for it on-line.

As a practicing luddite, I have had difficulty reconciling myself to some of these advances. I do have to admit, however, that when a patron shows up at the door with their Blackberry held out to show their reservation confirmation number I would like to hug them for making less work and fewer line-ups for everyone.

The best payback, though, is to cruise our website and see the photos of performers and sets from shows that are now history. It is a trip down memory lane, and I never fail to be moved by it, because, theatre is by definition a transitory art form.

Hoping to see you in real time at "The Playhouse".
